Meet the seven new Pokémon in Pokémon Sun and Moon

This morning, The Pokémon Company released a new video showcasing seven new Pokémon. The video marked the first glimpse of new Pokémon that we’ve received since E3 a couple of weeks ago, where Nintendo showed off different parts of the upcoming Nintendo 3DS games Pokémon Sun and Moon during its Treehouse livestream.

Although the video is in Japanese, and an English version has yet to be released, the names of the new Pokémon in the video have been discovered. Drampa, Togedemaru, Vikavolt, Cutiefly, Bruxish, Charjabug and Tapu Koko are the new names of the creatures that players can catch once Pokémon Sun and Moon are released this holiday season.

The most important questions, however, are what these Pokémon are capable of, what type of Pokémon they are and just how ridiculous or cool they look. For a more in-depth breakdown, Polygon reporters Allegra Frank and Julia Alexander did some research.

TAPU KOKO

This electric/fairy-type is the first to appear in the new trailer, where it’s sent into battle by the powerful trainer Hala. It’s the second Pokémon with that type matching, the first being the tiny mouse Dedenne. But unlike Dedenne, Tapu Koko is inspired by vicious insects instead of cuddly rodents. At least, that’s what it looks like — it’s hard to say just what, exactly, Tapu Koko is supposed to be. We get the sense that it’s a mosquito or gnat of some sorts, but its wild hair and shell-like arms suggest that we could be totally off base.CUTIEFLY

Cutiefly is a flying/fairy-type Pokémon that resembles both a hummingbird and a mosquito. Of course, with the word fly attached to the end of it, it’ll probably end up resembling something similar to a common housefly. In the video, we get a first glimpse of Cutiefly in action when it unleashes an airborne attack on a Pancham. The Pokémon also lives up to the first part of its name and is, indeed, very cute.TOGEDEMARU

Togedemaru is another electric-type, but don’t let its traditional electric rat look fool you: This guy’s part-steel, too. We haven’t seen that part of it in action yet, but it will be interesting to see how the steel typing comes into effect. For now, we know two things, and two things only. The first is that Togedemaru packs a punch with its Discharge attack. The second is that it is extremely cute.CHARJABUG

Charjabug, which looks like a combination of a bomb shelter and a decked out garbage truck, is an electric/bug-type Pokémon. In the video, we can see Charjabug, who has one of the worst names of all the new Pokémon revealed, deliver an electric-charged tackle on an opposing Popplio.

VIKAVOLT


Here’s yet another electric-type Pokémon. Vikavolt is part-bug, part-electric, but unlike Tapu Koko, its inspiration is clearer. It’s a beetle that’s not afraid to bite, so watch out for its Zap Cannon. Based on what we’ve seen of it in battle, it goes to show that even the most harmless Pokémon — like Charjabug, Vikavolt’s pre-evolution — can become some of the scariest.

BRUXISH


Bruxish is a water/psychic-type who has the special ability to dazzle its opponents, which shouldn’t be too surprising considering just how colorful and exuberant it appears. It’s only known move is Psywave, which can be seen in the video from The Pokémon Company. Bruxish uses the move on an opposing Pikachu, unleashing quite a bit of damage on the electric-type Pokémon.

DRAMPA


Sorry to the other six new Pokémon : Drampa is today’s best addition to the Pokédex. Drampa is a normal/dragon-type, the first of its kind. Looking at our new best pal here, it makes perfect sense. We’ve all met Drampa before — in our dreams, where it lived as our childhood imaginary friend. Drampa is essentially Puff the Magic Dragon, if you swap out the magic bag for the fearsome Dragon Breath attack. Look at that dopey, unassuming face and tell us that Drampa the Magic Dragon is anything but the star of Pokémon Sun and Moon’s latest trailer.
